Fernando Casasempere: Under the Forest, New Commission for the Jerwood Sculpture Park at Ragley Hall
The Jerwood Sculpture Park is delighted to announce that its latest commission, a monumental ceramic work by Chilean sculpture Fernando Casasempere, is to be installed in a wooded site at Ragley in May 2007.
Entitled Under the Forest, it comprises five colossal, tree trunk like forms which will blend with the surrounding trees and change with the seasons, following Fernando’s idea that ‘the piece should become one with nature rather than forcing itself on it’. To create the piece Fernando spent eight months last year at Baggeridge Brick’s Sedgley factory, working with local West Midlands clay mixed with clay and industrial waste materials from his native Chile. Measuring over three metres in height the forms only just fitted into Baggeridge’s twenty metre industrial kiln and are an extraordinary technical achievement.
