Jill Moser: New drawings

21 October – 3 December 2005

Introduction | More about this artist

Studio Caparrelli is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works on paper by New York artist Jill Moser. The highlight of the show is eight discreet drawings from the Blue Stillsseries, executed in ink and casein on archival watercolour paper.

The drawings follow Moser’s recent series of paintings titled Stills, which clearly evoke the cinematic experience of an image caught in action while being made. Like the paintings, the drawings are linked by their chromatic similarity and suggest a range of characters from the comic to the tragic to the erotic.
Rather than recalling definite forms, line shows its presence the paper as a trace captured in the act of describing; a fleeting moment that nevertheless marks the pictorial surface defining a magnetic space within its borders.

It is through the alliance of colour and sign that the works acquire their vibrant dynamism and powerful narrative tension, often close to the sphere of eroticism. This continuous dialogue between painting and drawing, colour and graphic (the gesture playing a leading role), determines the ambivalence of the generated forms.

In Blue Stills, Moser blots blue and black inks on a white casein ground, allowing different densities of line to be revealed while leaving a blue residue as further evidence of the evolving image. This exploration of the indexical nature of line is particularly influenced by the artist’s recent experience of making etchings.

This exhibition brings to light Moser’s current artistic research and evolving consideration of line as a principal actor in the pictorial field, where the predominance of the line and its power to evoke is constantly re-asserted.

Jill Moser’s work can be found in several important public collections across the US, such as The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art and the National Museum of American Art, Washington D.C., as well as numerous private collections.
